Don’t Throw Away Empty Ink Jet Cartridges!  Bring them to church!

Most of us have inkjet printers at home or work.  Next time when you have an empty cartridge, don’t throw it away.  The church is saving cartridges to send back and we get money for each one.  You can bring the INK-JET cartridge to the church office or if you would like we now have special baggies (available in the narthex) that you can take home or give out to friends.  These pre-paid postage baggies have a special bar code on them that automatically credits our church’s account.  These are handy to keep by your printer, so that you can just drop in a couple and mail it yourself.  Or if you would like, we still have the special recycle box in the Church office if you just want to bring your inkjet cartridges by.

Saving for the Future

For the past twenty years our church has been blessed by the mineral royalties of several bequests to the church.  Not many churches have this addition to congregational giving.  First, we built a bigger building than perhaps originally planned.   Then, we helped pay off the building indebtedness faster with those funds.  We did more in missions and general operations in the budget than we would have if we had depended solely on congregational giving.  When the endowment fund was begun through a monetary bequest we decided to begin to prepare for the future when royalties would cease (due to depletion or the move to alternative energy sources) because the building and operations of the church would continue.  It is good to have this Endowment fund, just like it is good for a family to have a savings account.  I am reminded of how Joseph helped the Pharaoh set aside grain during the years of plenty in preparation for the lean years.  We have grown too dependent upon the royalties, so the session decided at its October meeting that we needed to begin to set a tenth of royalty income each month, beginning Jan. 2007, to go to the Endowment Fund.  It is hoped that this “weaning off” of royalties will progress each year until it is all going into the Endowment.  A tenth is a good start.  Tithing is a good start in our personal giving.   Tithe a tenth, save a tenth has been a long time axiom for Christian financial planning.
