WOMEN’S MINISTRY RAISES $1500

Our Women’s Ministry Fundraiser had everything you could want last Saturday night with good food, homemade desserts, live plants, an excellent production of a children’s musical, and lots of people for good fellowship.

Members of the Hospitality Committee preparing the spaghetti, bread, and  salad were Brian Leslie, Julie Willis, Bill Spurr, Karen Wiley, and David Dean.

Auctioneer Buddy Power started each cake off at $20.  Bids grew until all the cakes were sold in the live auction and the silent auction.  The cakes, pies and cookies were an excellent example of how well our ladies can cook.  This includes the cakes that were made for the dessert table also.

The WOW children’s choir did  a wonderful job with the musical, The Three Trees with Ray and Kathleen Herman doing a great job directing, along with helpers Druann Rustenhaven and LeiLa Dixon.  Accompanist was Elsie Pugh.  Members of the Children’s Choir were Hailey Bonner, Katelynn Bonner,  Kaylee Certain, Gracey Ford,  Kensley Ford, Shaley Ford,  Morgan Gentry , Anthony Herman,  Sophie Hudson, Erin McCracken Rayford McCracken, Gabriella Rose,  Abby Whatley, and Devon Willis.

Our teenagers (Abby Herman, Samantha Herman, Anna Westmoreland) did a wonderful job as the three  trees.  Workmen included Robert Garen, Michael Cucinotta, and Stephen Willis. Nick Beranek played three parts:  King, Sailor, and Jesus.  Mary and Joseph were Virginia and Charles Crawford. Kathleen Herman was the narrator. These adults who helped with the acting topped it all off.   It all made your pastors proud!  Also thanks to LeIla Dixon, John Green, Druann Rustenhaven, Melissa Wilson, Pastor Rusty, and Pastor Mary Kathryn.

CUMBERLAND BOOK CLUB

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet,  Jamie Ford’s first novel is the selection for discussion at 3:30 p.m. May 27.

In the opening pages of Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet, Henry Lee comes upon a crowd gathered outside the Panama Hotel, once the gateway to Seattle’s Japantown. It has been boarded up for decades, but now the new owner has made an incredible discovery: the belongings of Japanese families, left when they were rounded up and sent to internment camps during World War II.  Set during one of the most conflicted and volatile times in American history, Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet is an extraordinary story of commitment and enduring hope. In Henry and Keiko, a young Japanese student, Jamie Ford has created an unforgettable duo whose story teaches us of the power of forgiveness and the human heart.

The selection for June 24 is The Submission by Amy Waldman.

The Cumberland Book Club has no “official” membership list. Anyone who wants to read a chosen book (or just listen to the discussion) may attend any of the meetings on the above  Sundays.  Cumberland Book Club meets on the fourth Sunday of each month at 3:30 p.m. in the conference room.
