Communicator of the Year

Mary Jo Schnorbus

We were able to surprise Mary Jo Schnorbus with our first ever Communicator of the Year award during worship this past Sunday.    Her whole family was able to be here and Johanna Smith, her granddaughter, was able to sing “Ave Maria” during the offertory.

This award is a fine way to support the endowment program of our denomination’s Publication Board (the entity that publishes The Cumberland Presbyterian magazine.    Also, the specific endowment is for Masaharu Asayama one of our longtime, faithful Japanese ministers who has done much for the spread of the gospel in Japan.    Since Mary Jo was on the denominational Board of Missions at one time, this is especially rewarding.

Mrs. Schnorbus proofs, folds and stuffs newsletters and bulletins each week.   She is the designated liason with publications such as the Marshall News Messenger and the Cumberland Presbyterian magazine.     She is an invaluable helper in the church office.    The session felt she would make a natural selection for this new award.   God has blessed our church family with many such talented people.   May God continue to encourage us as we serve Him together.

Pastor Rusty

Congratulations, Rutledge McClaran!

Dr. Rutledge McClaran was recently (February 19, 2007)honored by his colleagues, former students, friends, and family with the establishment of the “Dr. Rutledge McClaran Mathematics Scholarship” at East Texas Baptist University!   The endowment will help students who are pursuing a major or minor in one of the mathematics degree programs.

Dr. McClaran was on the ETBU faculty for over 41 years, serving as Professor of Mathematics, Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Academic Dean, Dean of Instruction, Dean of Liberal Arts, and Director of Institutional Planning, Assessment, and Research.

The Reverend Richard Magrill announces his retirement effective Sept. 30, 2007. Richard has served the church faithfully in many capacities including his work with the Historical Foundation, with Central Accounting, as editor of The Cumberland Presbyterian, and since 1989 as executive director of the Board of Stewardship, Foundation and Benefits.  He is steeped in history and commitment to the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and his retirement will be felt by all of us. Although many people are unaware of the tremendous ministry Richard has given to the church in his quiet unassuming ways behind the scenes, those who work with him depend greatly on his knowledge and wisdom. Our prayers are with Richard as he begins a new chapter in his life and ministry.

Just a reminder that Janie Oesch’s memorial service will be Friday, March 7th at 10 a.m. at Downs.   Bro.  Bill will conduct the service.   Please remember her daughter, Bonnie Stansell and the rest of the family in your prayers at this time.    We will serve a benevolence meal at 11:30 a. m.
